Kernel Pinching
This Practical Life activity is geared to challenge the child's
fine motor skills and enhance concentration. A child may choose this
activity from the shelf and carry it to a table. As the child carries
the tray they must focus on walking carefully while trying not to
drop or tip the tray. On the left side of the tray is a basket that
holds a single ear of corn. The ear of corn is picked up and the child
proceeds to pinch off a kernel of corn with their fingers. (This can
be a task for one whose pincer grip is not quite strong enough.) After
pinching off a kernel, the child may place it in a basket on the right
side of the tray. This is the kernel basket. When the child is finished,
they may place the ear of corn back in the corn basket. The child
is expected to place the tray back in its proper place on the shelf. |
