Pink Tower
The pink tower is a set of ten cubes with the largest being 10cm x 10cm,
the smallest being 1cm x 1cm, each cube decreasing in size by 1cm³. This
lesson helps to develop sense order, independence, coordination and concentration.
It also prepares the child developmentally for mathematical thinking,
the base 10 systems, spatial relations and visual discrimination of dimension.
When a child is interested in working with this material, they follow
these steps:
- Obtain a rug.
- Walk to the shelf containing the tower of cubes.
- Choose the smallest cube and place randomly on the rug.
- Continue until all cubes are on the rug.
- Put the largest cube in front center of the rug.
- Put next largest cube on top of largest cube.
- Repeat until tower is built.
- Admire the completed tower.
- Remove the smallest cube and place on the rug .
- Repeat until all cubes are on the rug.
- Return cubes, beginning with the largest to the shelf.
- Roll rug and return to its place.
Variations: Assemble tower horizontally on floor.
Assemble
tower so sides are flush on one side.
Extensions: Adding Broad Stair

Points of Interest: Feeling the weight of the cubes.
The
smallest cube.
Assembling
and disassembling the tower.
Carrying
one cube at a time.
Feeling the smooth surface of the
cubes.
Movement
needed to complete activity.
Control of Error: The cubes are alike in all respects but size.
They
decrease in size at a regular interval.
