The purpose of this material is to enable the toddler to grade the Red Satin Ribbons according to length. This encourages the development of visual perception and spatial orientation. This material also requires the child to work slowly as they begin to match each ribbon in the basket with the ribbons on the ribbon board. The ribbons can slide easily from the board as they are delicate and light to touch. Therefore the child must find slow and accurate movements a necessity for proper placement of each ribbon.

When the matching lesson is mastered, a new lesson is introduced with this material. A child may place the basket of ribbons on the floor (on a rug) and find objects that are the same length or color as the designated ribbon. This particular lesson can require a great deal of effort and concentration from the toddler.
