Teen Boards
This material is a math material which helps with the understanding
of counting to higher numbers once the child is comfortable with
counting 1 to 10. It is another level to abstraction as the child
begins to recognize the number with the quantity. It also helps
with the sequence of counting and identifying higher numbers.
The next steps will guide you in how the child uses the work.
1-Place the numeral cards 1-9 on the lower right hand corner of the rug.
2- Take one 10 bar and place it vertically to the left of the ten symbol
at the top of the board. Take the 1 bead bar and place it to the right
of the 10 bar. Ten together with one is the same as eleven.
3-Slide the numeral 1 card into the right hand side of the board covering
the zero, forming 11. Look at the beads, "This is eleven." Look at the
symbol, "This says eleven."
4-Take one 10 bar and place it vertically to the left of the next 10 symbol
on the board. Take the 2 bead bar and place it to the right of the 10
bar. Ten together with two is the same as twelve.
5-Slide the numeral 2 card into the right hand side of the board covering
the next zero, forming 12. Look at the beads, "This is twelve." Look at
the symbol, "This says twelve."
6-Continue this process until the quantities and symbols through 19 have
been completed. Read your numbers aloud 11 through 19. You may choose
to write your teens using the paper for the teen numbers.
7-Remove the numeral cards 1 - 9 and places them in the box for the next
person. Place the ten bars and the bead bars back into their holders and
leave the work ready for the next person.
Along with building new math skills the material helps to build order, concentration,
eye-hand coordination, sequencing and comparative skills.
